Mid-Pilot Update

AskSirMoodle Pilot is underway!

If you are curious about how the pilot of the AI Chat Bot in Moodle is going, just ask! Like this professor who writes: “I was wondering about this Sir Moodle. What was it trained on- our internal Moodle pages, Moodle documentation, or what? And if we use it, will the interactions be used as subsequent training material?” 

Love that you asked! AskSirMoodle uses a platform called DocsBot AI, which is a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) platform designed to create custom AI chatbots, Q&A widgets, and internal assistants trained directly on our own documentation. It allows us to add source documentation into a dynamic conversational agent without writing code. We fed the agent links to our documentation in Bookstack like the Moodle book, the Instructor Guidebook and a few other relevant chapters. We provided parameters such as the bot is not allowed to make up answers it doesn’t have, and can only provide responses related to the use of Moodle, not about the academic or curriculum.

As for performance, it is still early, but AskSirMoodle is showing positive signs. To date, seventy-nine people have signed up for the pilot, more than half are students. Since September 1, there have been 84 chats with many different questions related to using Moodle. If each chat saves a 5 minute ticket, staff time can be reserved for more difficult tasks. And the bot never sleeps! We are seeing roughly a third of chats happening after business hours. This translates to greater accessibility for help and support. We love this!

Remember: you can join the pilot anytime through the end of the Fall 2026 term! Use of the bot during the pilot will be used to improve the bot and to measure impact. Students and instructors are encouraged to sign up. Commitment is low, benefits are high. Those in the pilot will be asked to provide feedback on their experience. A full launch is planned for the Spring 2027.
