Moodle: Difference Between Date-Restricted Availability and Manually Hiding/Showing an Item
Summary
Instructors have two options in how activities are released to students in Moodle, manually hiding/showing the item or setting a date for the item to open and/or close. Each has a specific purpose:
- Use Manual Hiding for draft materials or content you are still building mid-semester.
- Use Date-Restricted Availability for timed quizzes, weekly content drops, or assignments tied to a strict syllabus schedule.
Below are details about how to distinguish between the two methods:
| Feature | Manual Hide / Show | Date-Restricted Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | Manual intervention. Instructors must remember to click the three dots icon next to an item and toggle "Hide from students" or "Show on course page". | Automated scheduling. Instructors use the "Restrict access" setting to schedule an automated date/time framework for release or closure. |
| Student Visibility | Completely invisible. The quiz disappears entirely from the student's course view, leaving blank space. | Flexible. Instructors can choose between completely hiding it, or leaving it visible but greyed out with a note (e.g., "Available from Nov 15"), allowing students to plan ahead. |
| Gradebook Impact | Hides corresponding grades. Hiding a quiz will often completely hide that grade column from students, preventing them from seeing their existing scores. | Preserves grade transparency. The item can remain greyed out or restricted on the main page while allowing students to view their grades in the gradebook. |
| The "Eye" Icon Meaning | Controls the absolute presence of the link on the main page. | Toggles whether the item is completely hidden from view OR visible-but-locked before the restriction dates pass. |
