Moodle Dark Mode
Summary
Dark Mode changes Moodle from a light background with dark text to a dark background with light text. This article is for any student, faculty, or staff member who wants to switch Dark Mode on or off.
This Guide Will Help You to:
Locate the Dark Mode Icon
The Dark Mode control is the moon icon in the top navigation bar. It sits to the left of the search, notifications, and profile icons.
The first time the icon appears, Moodle displays a short message pointing it out. Select Got it to dismiss the message.
Your Dark Mode choice is saved to your user preferences, so it follows you the next time you sign in, on any device.
Turn Dark Mode On
- Sign in to Moodle.
- Locate the moon icon in the top navigation bar, to the left of the search icon.
- Select the moon icon.
- The page reloads with the dark theme applied.
Turn Dark Mode Off
- Select the same icon in the top navigation bar.
- Moodle returns to the standard light theme.
You can switch back and forth as often as you like. Moodle remembers the last setting you chose.
Troubleshooting
- The icon appears but nothing changes. Clear your browser cache and reload the page. If it still fails, contact the Help Desk.
- Some pages stay light. Embedded content such as PDFs, H5P activities, and external tools keeps its own styling and is not affected by Dark Mode.
- Text is hard to read in Dark Mode. Content pasted with hard-coded colors can lose contrast. Report the specific course and page so the color can be corrected.
Accessibility Note
Dark Mode is a preference, not an accessibility feature. Some readers, including people with astigmatism, find light text on dark backgrounds harder to read. If you rely on high contrast, use your operating system's high contrast setting alongside whichever Moodle theme you prefer.
