Flip’s website and mobile apps will soon be retired; and Flip will be accessible for use only as an app inside Microsoft Teams for Education.Education. This is according to a June 3, 2024 posting on Flip’s X feed and and company website. Here are the key dates and changes:
– July 1, 2024: Flip will no longer be available in mobile app stores, and the Flip.com website will transition to view-only mode. You will not be able to create new groups, topics, or videos after this date.
– September 30, 2024:2024: Complete retirement of the Flip standalone apps. You will still be able to download your existing Flip videos until this date.
Use FlipGridFlip when you want students to to see, hear and interact with you and/or each other. You may have viewed and voted on the Innovation Challenge activities in FlipGrid that kept students’ minds sharp during their quarantine in 2021. In its simplest form, that is what FlipGridFlip allows you and your students to do: short videos that allow for commenting.

Steps
1. Log into FlipGrid
Access theFlipGrid Educatorspage.Use theGoogle Loginbutton and enter your Clarkson credentials.The FlipGrid homepage opens with theDiscussion tabselected on the top navigation bar.
2. Create a Group
From the two options at the top of the page, Groups & Topics. Click on theGroupsoption.
3. Click Create a Group.
Give the group an appropriatename.Next, accept or edit the suggestedjoin code.This join code may be shared with students as aURL.
4. Scroll through the Options
On the right side of the page, view the options for set up for each group you create. The** Details** have already been set up.Next click on or scroll down to setPermissions.The best method for Clarkson University students, faculty and staff is to choose byStudent Email.Simply add the domain@clarkson.eduand anyone with Clarkson credentials can access the shared FlipGrid and will be able to view videos and comment.
Featuresallows the choice of whether students receive email notifications of new topics; Inactivate a group by changingActivestatus toHidden.Lastly, on this page, upload animageto make your group page more engaging. This finishes the Group set up. Next is the Topic set up.
5. Create a New Topic
Click on the Discussion tab on the top navigation bar.This time choose1. Topics and2.Add a Topic.Topics can be assimpleas an icebreaker of introductions or morecomplexsuch as giving a presentation. First, give the topic a title. Do not worry; the title can be edited later.TheTopic optionDetailsis a very powerful option; enter just a simple question for students, or enter a more complex question, up to 1000 characters. Add the question to the **Prompt area.Whether short or long, questions can be combined with a wide variety of media types; for example, have studentsdiscuss an image or a video. Experiment with combining the FlipGrid with otherdigital cloud toolssuch as a Google Doc, Wakelet or a poll.Permissionscan be changed by Topic assigned but the recommendation is not to use the Public option because you will have to moderate every comment before it is posted.Essentials, however, allows quite a bit of control over the videos that are uploaded.Optionally, adjust any of the following shown below:
Topic Moderation(again, approval for each submission is required before it shows to the class (group)).Recording Timeallows for video submissions up to 10 minutes. Be careful with setting the longer recording times so that students do not lose interest. For example, if they are to peer review 10-minute presentations, two or three are probably enough. However, if presentations are 3 minutes, then they can peer review more.SetCommentsto be by video, text or both.Set the language forCCFlipGrid is constantly expanding your options so you will want to explore theMore optionslink after you have become an experience FlipGrid user.Lastly, clickCreate Topic!
Now you are ready to share your FlipGrid topic!
6. Share Your FlipGrid Topic
As new topics are created, a list like below will grow on the Topics page. This page is very powerful because of the many options.
In theTitlecolumn, all of the videos are listed.TheGroupcolumn shows which group has access to which Topic.Hide or makea Topicactive, by changing the drop down in that column.ToSharethe video from this page, there are a variety of options to explore. Simplest is tocopy the URL and sharethe topic with students. This is also a good place to check that the permissions are correct.Next is theActionsmenu - make choices regarding this Topic or skip it.Lastly,Edityour Topic by clicking on theEdit pencil.
Now that you have created and shared a topic with your students, you will want to know where to view their videos submissions.
7. View Students Videos in FlipGrid
If the Topic was shared with students through a URL (as suggested in Step 6.4), one way to view the submissions is by clicking on the same URL.After logging in with Clarkson credentials, view the Topic the way students view the Topic when logged in.The directions provided and any image are right up front, along with theRecord a Responsebutton.Any videos that have been recorded for the Topic will be in rows at the bottom of the window, as shown below.
As students record their responses, view their videos in slideshow style. Click on theAdd video commentbutton to makes comments on the posted videos.Alternatively, go tothe FlipGrid teacher account, theDiscussion-Topicspage, to click on any video or to view or explore other individual options under theActive,ShareorActionsbuttons to the right.
Finally, on the Feedback page, scroll down to record feedback for students’ posted responses, give private text feedback or use the rubric option.
