FlipGrid Create - Share - View
Use FlipGrid when you want students to see, hear and interact with you and/or each other. You may have viewed and voted on the Innovation Challenge activities in FlipGrid that kept students’ minds sharp during their quarantine in 2021. In its simplest form, that is what FlipGrid allows you and your students to do: short videos that allow for commenting.
To add a FlipGrid assignment to, follow the steps below or watch this TLC created FlipGrid Quick Tutorial video.
Steps
1. Log into FlipGrid
-
Access the FlipGrid Educators page.
-
Use the Google Login button and enter your Clarkson credentials.
-
The FlipGrid homepage opens with the Discussion tab selected on the top navigation bar.
2. Create a Group
- From the two options at the top of the page, Groups & Topics. Click on the Groups option.
3. Click Create a Group.
- Give the group an appropriate name.
- Next, accept or edit the suggested join code.
- This join code may be shared with students as a URL.
4. Scroll through the Options
-
On the right side of the page, view the options for set up for each group you create. The** Details** have already been set up.
-
Next click on or scroll down to set Permissions.
-
The best method for Clarkson University students, faculty and staff is to choose by Student Email.
-
Simply add the domain @clarkson.edu and anyone with Clarkson credentials can access the shared FlipGrid and will be able to view videos and comment.
-
-
Features allows the choice of whether students receive email notifications of new topics; Inactivate a group by changing Active status to Hidden.
-
Lastly, on this page, upload an image to make your group page more engaging. This finishes the Group set up. Next is the Topic set up.
5. Create a New Topic
-
Click on the Discussion tab on the top navigation bar.
-
This time choose 1. Topics and 2. Add a Topic.
-
Topics can be as simple as an icebreaker of introductions or more complex such as giving a presentation. First, give the topic a title. Do not worry; the title can be edited later.
-
The Topic option Details is a very powerful option; enter just a simple question for students, or enter a more complex question, up to 1000 characters. Add the question to the **Prompt area.
-
Whether short or long, questions can be combined with a wide variety of media types; for example, have students discuss an image or a video. Experiment with combining the FlipGrid with other digital cloud tools such as a Google Doc, Wakelet or a poll.
-
Permissions can be changed by Topic assigned but the recommendation is not to use the Public option because you will have to moderate every comment before it is posted.
-
Essentials, however, allows quite a bit of control over the videos that are uploaded.
-
Optionally, adjust any of the following shown below:
-
Topic Moderation (again, approval for each submission is required before it shows to the class (group)).
-
Recording Time allows for video submissions up to 10 minutes. Be careful with setting the longer recording times so that students do not lose interest. For example, if they are to peer review 10-minute presentations, two or three are probably enough. However, if presentations are 3 minutes, then they can peer review more.
-
Set Comments to be by video, text or both.
-
Set the language for CC
-
FlipGrid is constantly expanding your options so you will want to explore the More options link after you have become an experience FlipGrid user.
-
Lastly, click Create Topic!
Now you are ready to share your FlipGrid topic!
6. Share Your FlipGrid Topic
- As new topics are created, a list like below will grow on the Topics page. This page is very powerful because of the many options.
-
In the Title column, all of the videos are listed.
-
The Group column shows which group has access to which Topic.
-
Hide or make a Topic active, by changing the drop down in that column.
-
To Share the video from this page, there are a variety of options to explore. Simplest is to copy the URL and share the topic with students. This is also a good place to check that the permissions are correct.
-
Next is the Actions menu - make choices regarding this Topic or skip it.
-
Lastly, Edit your Topic by clicking on the Edit pencil.
Now that you have created and shared a topic with your students, you will want to know where to view their videos submissions.
7. View Students Videos in FlipGrid
-
If the Topic was shared with students through a URL (as suggested in Step 6.4), one way to view the submissions is by clicking on the same URL.
-
After logging in with Clarkson credentials, view the Topic the way students view the Topic when logged in.
-
The directions provided and any image are right up front, along with the Record a Response button.
-
Any videos that have been recorded for the Topic will be in rows at the bottom of the window, as shown below.
-
As students record their responses, view their videos in slideshow style. Click on the Add video comment button to makes comments on the posted videos.
-
Alternatively, go to the FlipGrid teacher account, the Discussion-Topics page, to click on any video or to view or explore other individual options under the Active, Share or Actions buttons to the right.
Finally, on the Feedback page, scroll down to record feedback for students’ posted responses, give private text feedback or use the rubric option.
